Despite the continuing record breaking temperatures your Club has been very busy with a number of high profile events. Well, what a mixed season it’s turning out to be. We’ve played in baking sunshine and pouring rain and have had to reorganise more than one match but things are in full swing now and there’s a lot going on. Four of our members represented the club at the Community Showcase held at Sir William Romney. Those of you walking by the bowls club on the cemetary side will have seen the big tree painted on the wall of our changing rooms. This is our memory tree. Members can buy an individually painted leaf with the names and dates of past players at the club. It’s proved popular with more than a dozen memorials to loved ones, family and friends now gone but never forgotten. With the playing season in full swing it is great to be out playing lawn bowls once again. There is much activity around all the different competitions with individual matches, league games, friendlies and members coming along for a friendly roll up. The weather was kind to us for our Opening Gala on Sunday the 12 of April with just a few spits and spots of rain, which quickly passed over. We began with the annual photo, eager faces, ready for anything. Then followed the Spider, this year to raise funds for VIBE, Visually Impaired Bowls England, to help towards their costs competing in the Commonwealth Games. Following a successful, and well attended, opening gala your Management Committee met to discuss a variety of issues and check on progress on plans for the season ahead. This year is the 70th anniversary of the Club moving to our current location and plans are underway for a date during the season to hold some form of celebration. More details will follow shortly. The winter season is coming to an end and we must thank all those involved in the Friday night socials, especially Dawn on the bar and Chris in the kitchen. Vic and Rob O enjoying the kitchen remodel Following on from last month’s article, I’m delighted to say that our new new kitchen is in, up and running, just waiting for a few final touches to complete. It looks great and our ‘men in hats’ have done incredibly well to fit smooth modern units into a definitely not straight walled room. So good to see people happy in their work! As we fast approach the start of the playing season there are a few items to make you aware of. The club was formed in 1908 and moved to our current location in 1956 so we are celebrating 70 years this year at the recreation ground. A celebration of this milestone will be announced in the near future. The access code to open the key box for the key to open the clubhouse will be changed with effect from Monday 16 February. The Christmas activities are over and outside the new edging is finished, bulbs are planted in the pots ready for spring and the green is treated and resting to be in great condition for the season. Whilst the outdoor bowling season has come to end for 2025 the Club’s thoughts turn to preparation for 2026. The green is the first action that has to be taken in the autumn and winter months.
