What a great time the 24 members of Tetbury Bowls Club had on our 2026 tour to Portugal. The weather was perfect for our bowling, exploring the area, visiting the beach and lounging by the pool. Both men's and ladies' teams have given good showings of themselves with our new ladies settling particularly well into their league roles. Phoebe Bray [Hodges] first discovered bowls through an after-school short mat bowls session held on Mondays at her school. Inspired by her Grampy, who already plays bowls for Tetbury, Phoebe was keen to find out more about the sport. Although she was initially a little shy during her first session, encouragement and support from the coaches helped her gain confidence and give bowls a try. At the time of writing we have just held the Closing Gala on what was seen as a very successful event. We had 44 members playing over 6 rinks with a number of spectators who all came together at the end to enjoy a buffet that Heather put together for us. We’ve played in baking sunshine and pouring rain and have had to reorganise more than one match but things are in full swing now and there’s a lot going on. Those of you walking by the bowls club on the cemetary side will have seen the big tree painted on the wall of our changing rooms. This is our memory tree. Members can buy an individually painted leaf with the names and dates of past players at the club. It’s proved popular with more than a dozen memorials to loved ones, family and friends now gone but never forgotten. The weather was kind to us for our Opening Gala on Sunday the 12 of April with just a few spits and spots of rain, which quickly passed over.
