Summer season here we come

The winter season is coming to an end and we must thank all those involved in the Friday night socials, especially Dawn on the bar and Chris in the kitchen. We’ve played cracking games of bingo with an ongoing jackpot of £250 for the winner, enjoyed a few fun quizzes and taken part in our new, end of the evening, Play Your Cards Right.

Now it’s time, at last, to think of our Summer Season. The green is ready for action, the fixtures list drawn up with midweek and weekend friendlies booked in. Ladies and Men’s league teams are being organised and members are deciding which of the club competitions they want to enter this year. There is a buzz of excitement preparing the clubhouse for outdoor games again and we are all looking forward to our Opening Gala on Sunday the 12th of April.

Have you ever stopped and watched a match over the Cemetary wall or from the Rec? Think it looks easy? Wondered what it’s all about and fancy having a go yourself? Well, now’s your chance as we are having a number of open days across the season as part of Bowls England ‘Big Bowls Summer’. Our dates are Sunday the 3rd of May, Sunday the 31st of May, Saturday the 13th of June and Saturday the 4th of July, anytime between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. Just wear flat shoes and we’ll do the rest. We will provide equipment and initial coaching and there will be refreshments available and members to chat to.

It’s a gently competitive game, not as easy as it looks and you’ll find yourself challenging yourself, as well as your opponents, match by match. On Friday evenings we run an informal league, popular with new players so if this suits you better please feel free to pop in any Friday for an informal chat and maybe a quick try out. Under 18s are also more than welcome to our Sunday morning session, it’s not long before they too are taking part in our friendly matches.

Of course, we mustn’t forget the social side. Most games you’ll be part of a team and there’s always a cuppa or a drink afterwards. It’s good to welcome members of other clubs to Tetbury and to visit their greens for away matches. If you don’t feel up to playing but fancy the rest of it, you can become a social member to sit with a drink and watch the matches from the bank or the clubhouse and take part in all other social events throughout the year. We’re a friendly bunch and new members are very welcome…..come and give us a go, what do you have to lose?
