News from the Chair May 2025

Another busy month for your Management Committee what with the start of the bowling season (hurrah) and activities going on at the Club.

I will start with a BIG mention to Jack Garland, one of our Juniors, who has represented Gloucestershire Juniors (under 18s) in the Four Counties competition which Gloucestershire won. Well done Jack.

You may have noticed that we have had a tree painted onto the outside wall of the men's changing room, next to the clock. The tree was painted by Keith and Katie Appleton, the same artists who painted our mural. The tree is known as the "Memory Tree" and members are invited to contact me if they wish to have a past member's name added to the tree by way of a small plaque. The actual plaques to be used will be the same size and design for all names of those no longer with us and the final design will be decided on soon. The cost of the plaque will be met by the person(s) who wish to have a name on the tree.

Once we have some names to place on the tree Dr. Steve Bullock, Curate of St. Mary's, will carry out a short service of remembrance for us by the tree.

Our next big social will be the Race Night on Saturday 31 May with the first race "off" at 7 pm. All the races have sponsors, there will be 9 races in all, and all the horses have owners. The cost for the night will be £5 which includes a ploughman's supper served after the 5th race. Please sign up if we wish to attend.

Also on the social calendar a little later in the year is our auction. Further details will be sent to you for this event on 15 August as we are looking for people to offer items or services for sale. The proceeds of this will go towards next year's complete kitchen rebuild.

We have a number of Open Days coming up, the first being this Sunday. Please encourage anyone you know who has thought about bowls to come along and give it a go. If they can't make it this Sunday we have other Open Days on Friday 23 May at 6 pm or Sunday 25 May 1 until 4 pm. These last two dates are supported by the Bowls England "Big Bowls Weekend".

Finally we have 6 teams entered into our Corporate Day being held on Sunday 8 June. This is a friendly competition between local Companies and Organisations where non bowlers play for a hamper of goodies. If you know of any teams that would like to take part in a friendly afternoon of bowls please check our website or contact me.
